More than just a Milk Bar

MITCHELL WOODCOCKSouth Western Times

Yoyo's Icecream Parlour in Bunbury’s CBD takes customers back in time to the 1950s using photographs of Marilyn Monroe, rock ‘n’ roll music and an authentic milk bar.

Yvonne Williams and Steve Brine have a passion for vintage items and a keen interest in the decade which was the 50s, so they turned their vintage clothing store on Arthur Street into a 50s diner.

“We used to sell ice cream in the vintage clothes store and a few people said they wished we would sell it again, ” Miss Williams said.

“So we decided to have a crack at doing the diner, including selling old world lollies and give it a 50s theme.

“Steve and I are both into vintage, to the point we are collectors and the 50s had great cars, fashion and rock ‘n’ roll.

“Young people used to hang out in places like this and what we find now is that the people we get in here just want to do the same.”

Yoyo’s is decorated with authentic 50s memorabilia.

They have everything from the old Coke advertisements to the classic ice cream dishes and even the authentic paper straws the milkshakes can be enjoyed through.

Colourful jars of lollies line the shelves, an old milkshake mixer lights up the room after dark and the chequered floors take customers back to a bygone era.

Miss Williams said people often came in to have a look at the colourful milk bar and everyone left with a smile.

“People come in and they just love it, ” she said.

“Everybody has said it is about time Bunbury got cooler and had something a bit different.

“You only have to look at the place and it makes you smile. It’s fresh, fun and classy.

“We don’t want to be the same as everyone, there are plenty of cafes but we aren’t one of them.”
