Slammers tackle Wolves at home

Mitchell Woodcock, SOUTH WESTERN TIMESSouth Western Times

The Collie Crane Hire South West Slammers women's side will be looking to get back to their winning ways on Saturday night when they host the Joondalup Wolves at the Eaton Recreation Centre.

The Slammers suffered their first defeat of the season, going down to the Mandurah Magic by seven points after winning the opening four clashes of the season.

But the Slammers are not without form and are being well led by co-captain Kate Fielding and import Deonica McCormick.

Coach Darren Austin said McCormick was unwell during their clash against Mandurah and Fielding was carrying some niggling injuries, but both were expected to line up this weekend.

"The girls were a bit tired after the game," he said.

"This week's a huge challenge, Joondalup have done a great job recruiting this year."

Austin said his side would focus on their defence and stopping pivotal players from other sides, after Magic star Casey Mihovilovich got away from them at the weekend.

"In our last few games we have let one player dominate us a bit," he said.

"We need to get the girls focused for a longer period of time.

"The concern this week is Joondalup have a lot of players who can hurt you."

Joondalup coach Vlad Alava said his side could not afford to worry about the Slammers' structure.

"We have to take care of our own business," he said.

"At this point of the season it's about executing what we do.

"I have been happy with all our girls. We have a good spread of scorers and the girls are sharing it well."

Alava did single out McCormick, believing his side would have to give her "the respect she deserved".

"You would be crazy not to limit what she wants to do," he said.

Austin said import Patricia Bright was improving every week and would be pivotal this weekend against a tall Joondalup outfit.

"Patricia is unfortunately getting into foul trouble and on the weekend it hurt us a bit," he said.

The South West Slammers host the Joondalup Wolves at the Eaton Recreation Centre on Saturday night, with tip-off at 6pm.
