The South West is known for producing some of Australia's best female BMX riders, with Olympian Lauren Reynolds and the late Helena Giblett as standouts.

A name that could soon join them is Brydie Ward, who last month broke a 28-year-old speed record set by the legendary Giblett.

Ward, 15, was competing in Cockburn when she beat Giblett's record, with officials (who keep the times a secret) confirming the teen had done what seemed impossible.

Brydie won the Helena Giblett Memorial Trophy, awarded to the Queen of the BMX Super Series.

"I was winning at the track all day and they asked me if I wanted to have a go at breaking the record," Brydie said.

"I am proud and honoured to receive a record and trophy named after Helena."

Brydie, who idolises Australian BMX rider Caroline Buchanan, said she began racing after her brother took up the sport and she too became interested in it.

"I am hoping to one day get to the Olympics," she said.

Fellow South West BMX star Rachelle Smith won the Helena Giblett Memorial Trophy last year.

Giblett, who won 12 State titles and competed successfully at national and international levels, tragically died in 2013 at the age of 35.
