Banking on the momentum that a Melbourne derby win would generate, rival BBL captains Marcus Stoinis and Will Sutherland are urging their teams to not panic.

While Stoinis and his Stars teammates had their first win of the season this week, they remain at the foot of the ladder with a 1-5 record.

Sutherland's Renegades go into the Saturday night derby at the MCG in fifth place with a 2-3 record, after they were on the wrong end of a Chris Lynn batting masterclass on Thursday against Adelaide.

The Strikers broke a three-game losing streak with their Marvel Stadium win and Lynn noted that they remain in the top-four hunt, given the evenness of the competition.

"That's the only way to do it in a competition where games come so quickly. You can't panic or try to reinvent the wheel mid-tournament," Sutherland said in Friday's pre-game media conference.

"You have to stay quite positive. Our batting line-up is strong and our bowling as well, so there's no reason for us to panic."

As Lynn said after beating the Renegades, Stoinis felt their win came on the back of plenty of good work during their losing run.

"It would be great to get this first (derby) win and then get to Marvel in a week or so and have another crack at them," Stoinis said.

"I'm looking at the ladder and yes, we would have loved to have won more, of course, but the way it looks we're still right in it.

"Keep bringing the same attitude, regardless of results, the same energy, the same character, the same courage to each situation and game, that's all we can ask."

Bowler Gurinder Sandhu and batter Jonathan Wells are on the verge of coming into the Renegades line-up, while Sutherland said opener Josh Brown is not in doubt despite leaving the ground because of illness in Thursday's loss.

Likewise, Stoinis said his star allrounder Glenn Maxwell will play after some talk of an ankle injury.

The Stars have taken careful note of how Adelaide suffocated the Renegades' middle order.

After looking reasonably well-set at 3-100 in the 14th over, the Renegades could only managed 9-142 and were shot once Lynn and fellow opener D'Arcy Short put on 104.

"It was obvious how well-planned they were last night, the fields they started with," Stoinis said of Adelaide.

"Although they (Renegades) got off to a pretty good start ... it's been a bit of a theme for a few teams, those middle overs and that middle order can be put under pressure.

"There are big grounds, the wickets can be tough - so bowl some good spin, use the ground to your advantage, set the right fields. They'll be under pressure."
