Big Bash League: Adam Voges says Cooper Connolly ‘wouldn’t’ be out of place on Australia’s tour of Sri Lanka
Perth Scorchers and WA coach Adam Voges says rising star Cooper Connolly wouldn’t look out of place on Australia’s Test tour of Sri Lanka.
The 21-year-old Scorchers all-rounder carries the gold cap for most runs in the Big Bash to date, hitting 229 at a blistering 57.25 with 12 maximums.
Connolly also offers impressive left-arm spin, even entrusted by Perth Scorchers captain Ashton Turner to deliver the final over against Adelaide Strikers on New Year’s Eve.
And with two Tests at the picturesque Sri Lanka ground Galle International Stadium, which is known for spin-friendly conditions, starting at the end of the month, the young star could be in the frame to partner Nathan Lyon and add to his ODI and T20 International debuts achieved in 2024.
“I think with the left-arm spin skill set, I think that’s something Australian selectors have openly spoken about, and he provides that,” Voges said ahead of the Scorchers taking on Sydney Thunder at Optus Stadium.
“He provides an all-round option, and I’d be surprised if he’s not in the conversation.
“We haven’t had any indications either way, but if Coop continues the form that he’s showing at the moment, then I think he’ll give himself every opportunity.
“He hasn’t played a lot of Shield cricket (after breaking his hand against Pakistan in Perth) this year, but when he has done, he’s done well. So, he wouldn’t look out of place in that tour (of Sri Lanka).”
Connolly has shown maturity beyond his years in BBL14, pulling Perth out of trouble on multiple occasions and batting deep into the innings, coming in at first drop.
Against Adelaide, he slotted in at four but was at the crease with his side 2-5.
Despite the home side and fans sensing blood, Connolly made the chase of 143 look casual, cracking bad balls to and over the fence while smartly milking ones and twos on his way to an unbeaten 48 from 35 deliveries.
The class knock sealed his team’s first road victory of the campaign and sent them to second on the table.
“Cooper’s going beautifully at the moment, and it’s another great innings. It’s really composed,” Voges said.
“I thought he batted beautifully, and he’s doing a great job.”
The only downside for the Scorchers if Connolly were to earn a place in Sri Lanka is how many stars they could be missing come finals.
Josh Inglis, Mitch Marsh, Jhye Richardson, Lance Morris and Connolly could all be involved in Australia’s selection discussions.
“We sit down at the beginning of the season and plan for all of these scenarios, hence why we’ve got three overseas players who are fully available for the whole tournament, and they’ve still got roles to play,” Voges said.
“If they are on that tour, then great for them. We want to keep presenting and providing Australian cricketers and Test cricketers. Equally, if they are not, we’ll welcome them home.”
“We’ll just see how the cards fall.”
